The Fairgrounds is the second chapter in Left 4 Dead 2's Dark Carnival campaign.

First revealed at the Penny Arcade Expo and again in Tokyo Game Show '09, it contains a small-scale Gauntlet Crescendo Event whereby opening a gate also turns on a loud carousel that attracts a horde of Infected. The Survivors must run through this fast spawning threat in order to reach the control lever that switches it off. Unfortunately the horde continues to spawn for quite some time thereafter and the subsequent fight is thus invariably fast, furious and tense.

This is the first chapter that spawns the Clown Infected.

This is one of the longest chapters in the two Left 4 Dead games and takes players through the fiendishly complex game play environment offered by an overrun amusement park. The safe room at the end of the level is in the Tunnel of Love.

All campaign walkthroughs are done on Normal difficulty in single player, and are meant to give tips on what to do and generally point out things that might otherwise be missed.

There are, of course, a few key things to always remember:

  • Stop, look, and listen.
    • Being observant might alert you to something nasty ahead of time, like a Witch, Special Infected or Tank, and allow you to prepare yourself.
  • Teamwork.
    • This cannot be stressed enough. Left 4 Dead is supposed to be a cooperative game. Communicate with your teammates, if you're playing with others, or if you're by yourself with the AI, point out things they might otherwise miss. In all cases, watch out for each other and take care of each other. You are not going to survive the zombie apocalypse by yourself.
  • Be ready for anything.
  • Don't panic.

The carnival's in town, and everyone's invited. Including the Infected. Just remember to avoid the clowns and the large lines..

Campaign[]

When starting from this chapter, the AI Survivors will usually grab their preferred weapon:

Players exit the safe room and head towards the park entrance. At this point players with Hunting Rifles from the previous level can mop up the many Common Infected milling around. The guard house to the right is a regular spawn point for pistols, pills, melee weapons and sometimes ammo upgrades. In the ticket offices, there's usually a throwable item, and on occasions, an Ammo Upgrade in them.

After clearing this initial area, continue proceeding into the park. The large area is a prime spot for a Tank or Witch to spawn, so be prepared for them. To the left are a pair of restrooms; the male restroom contain three Rescue Closets, while the female restroom is populated with Infected and can occasionally contain throwables or healing items. These locations are good holdout spots when a horde comes, as they'll be funneled into a choke spot that easily eliminates them. Near the restrooms is a small restaurant; the tables outside might contain an ammo upgrade or even laser sights, while inside will contain various items including a P220 Pistol, gas cans, propane tanks and some melee weapons; occasionally there will be throwables, healing items or a grenade launcher.

Further up the park is a shooting minigame where the players can acquire Gnome Chompski, allowing them to obtain Achievements#GUARDIN' GNOME without relying on the Last Gnome on Earth mutation. The counter by the minigame can hold a mix of up to three throwables and healing items.

In order to obtain Chompski, the player must acquire a minimum of 750 points in one game:

  • Shooting burglars with peanuts will award 20 points.
  • Shooting burglars of the same type will award 30 points each time this occurs.
  • Shooting Moustachio will award 100 points. His appearance is indicated with a laugh.
  • Shooting Lil' Peanut will deduct 100 points. His appearance is indicated with "Here I am!"

Once the player acquires 750 or more points, the case containing Chompski will open and a player can grab him. However, he can only be used as an impromptu melee weapon, and the achievement requires him to escape in the rescue vehicle in the chapter's finale.

Past the minigame is a table where players can acquire tier 2 weapons (and the tier 1 hunting rifle), which should be immediately grabbed. There are few extra items that generally lie around the tents, though they are generally not worth exploring. A sharp turn to the right will lead into a warehouse, which can contain a Tank or Witch if they have not spawned yet. More throwables and healing items can be found, along with melee and tier 2 weapons. Inside the warehouse, a turn to the left after the tables contains another rescue closet if needed. Upon leaving the warehouse, make a turn to the right, where another tent can be found straight ahead with more tier 2 weapons.

A turn to the left will lead players down a slope into Kiddie Land. Kiddle Land is a very popular spot for Tanks and Witches to spawn in, generally to the left upon clearing the slope. Both can either spawn in the middle of the area or at the end with the safe house sign. Going left advances players towards the main path, while a detour to the right usually will not yield much outside of the occasional ammo upgrade on some tables. Kiddle Land's restrooms are found in the extreme right, of which one group of three rescue closets can be found. While going through the main path, players should also hug the fenced off area between Kiddle Land and the slides, as the area right behind it is another area for the Tank or Witch to spawn in.

A restaurant near the safe house sign should be entered to look for various supplies, including a random gun, melee weapon, gas can, propane tank, and occasionally throwables, healing items, ammo upgrades and laser sights (which can also spawn outside). When Kiddle Land is sufficiently cleared, head down the sign and clear Infected in the area. To the left after the corridor is a truck containing random tier 2 weapons and occasionally a throwable. To the right is the main path, where it is possible for a Tank or Witch to spawn in. Players will notice an open area to the left which can be entered to find a warehouse containing a random tier 1 or 2 gun, melee weapons, throwing and healing items. At the end of the way is an ammo pile, a random tier 1 or 2 weapon and a first aid box which is guaranteed to hold two pain pills if health kits are not provided. Hordes that spawn in this area will do so outside, and can be easily dispatched by lighting the nearby gas can.

Climbing up will lead to the building's roof where more Infected are encountered. Players will notice a small room to the left which contains a random weapon, occasional healing items/throwables and another rescue closet. By going over the roofs, players will arrive at the top of a big slide where they can safely snipe the infected from afar. Special Infected will generally spawn below and are easy targets to pick off. It is recommended to use the stairs to descend, as the slides can cause damage and/or even death if jumping. Another rescue closet can be found in the restroom.

To the right is a fenced off area to the carousel, though some staircases nearby alleviates the barricade. A turn to the left will lead to a supply area containing tier 2 weapons, a melee weapon, ammo pile and a first aid box that is guaranteed to hold four pain pills if health kits are not provided. Once the entire team is ready, jump down to the carousel area; this area is a one-way jump, so be wary of any Smokers, though at this point AI Special Infected will spawn in front of them.

In order to progress to the safe room, Survivors must activate the carousel, causing it to emit loud noises that attract an endless Horde at the team. Before starting the Crescendo Event, it is highly recommended that players explore an often overlooked room that can potentially contain supplies and holds the chapter's last rescue closet.

The actual sprint to the off switch on the far side of the ride is very easy and relatively free of Infected on Normal setting. In fact it is only once players arrive at the alcove housing this switch that the Horde pitch up in large numbers. Players can ignore the stairs on the left, and instead jump and activate the shutdown switch from the right. Combat around the alcove and picnic tables is furious close quarter action and players with melee weapons (like the Katana) will not go short of healthy exercise.

If a Tank or Witch has not spawned, this is the final area for them to spawn in. It is very uncommon for a second Witch to spawn, especially on higher difficulties, in front of the Tunnel of Love. This can be a problem if the team is low on health, though bots will unintentionally startle her as they make their way to the safe room. If the Witch does not spawn there but can be heard, she is likely behind the carousel and players will have to be extremely mindful of their shooting to avoid startling her. Likewise, it is possible for a Tank to spawn behind the carousel building, which can make it extremely problematic when combined with the Crescendo Event. Players should use molotovs or pipe bombs for this situation.

Notes[]

  • The shooting gallery theme sounds similar to the music played in the beginning of a campaign, only cheerier.
  • In Versus, as an Infected, using your melee attack on the case that holds Gnome Chompski will make him fall out onto the ground.
  • In Versus, similar to Special Infected, Survivors can melee the box and Gnome Chompski will fall out.
  • If you throw a Molotov into the shooting gallery Moustachio will make a weird sound, and all the targets will go down, as if they were shot.
  • The merry-go-round alarm does not have to be shut off to make it to the safe room, however on any difficulty higher than easy this is a risky proposition. If you choose not to turn it off, the hordes will strangely stop to a halt, where at other times the Horde will keep on coming with brief periods of safety.
  • While carrying Gnome Chompski if you stop and look at the "You must be this tall to ride" sign near the merry-go-round, the survivors will comment on Gnome Chompski being too short to ride. If Coach looks at the sign, he will comment on how the Jockey is too short to be on the ride, only for Nick to counter back saying that there would be "lots and lots" of Tanks.
  • It is possible for Special Infected to spawn before the safe room door is opened. If a survivor is at the right half of the door, this allows Special Infected to spawn. The Survivor has to be hugging the door for this to happen. This is noticeable when the safe room music stops playing. This is also noticeable in split screen Versus where the Infected player is able to spawn. However be patient as once the Special Infected are able to spawn, the Survivors can stay in the safe room as long as they don't open the door.
  • In this part in the Campaign, there's a chance that 2 Witches and a Tank might spawn at this chapter. The same also appears to affect the Swamp Fever campaign. However, the chances of this outside this part of the campaign and Swamp Fever are highly unlikely.
  • In Kiddie Land, if a player goes on the right side of the area (right after you pass the canvas tent with the Propane tank and Gas can), and looks at the blocked off area, an ammo upgrade can spawn there, however it cannot be reached. This suggests in earlier playtests the Survivors were to go that way and jump down into Kiddie Land.
  • In this part of Dark Carnival only, players can encounter weapon areas with the same type of gun (2 Sniper Rifles, 2 Auto Shotguns, etc.) This can be a glitch or was intended for players to use that gun if their gun was running low on ammo.
