Riverside Tunnel is the tunnel near Riverside that the Survivors cross during the first chapter of the "Death Toll" campaign in Left 4 Dead.

History[]

The tunnel is 18'6" (563 cm) in height and half an exit mile (804 m) in length. It serves as one of the main access points from the north to the town of Riverside. The tunnel connects off a bridge which follows the highway and traffic flow is controlled by a nearby traffic light, eventually leading into the town.

The tunnel itself has rooms along the sides, used for storage as well as maintenance. It also seems that the tunnel is near the Eastern Waterworks plant that helps assist with the overflow pipes for Riverside. Presumably the toll booth is inside the tunnel, past the barricade, that is never seen in-game by the Survivors due to the impassable traffic jam.

Current Status[]

With the Infection rapidly getting closer to Riverside and the military outpost at Whitney County being overrun, the military's combat engineers deliberately dropped the bridge just outside the Riverside Tunnel as part of a plan to defend Riverside. Once the bridge was down, they blocked the tunnel to prevent the more direct route leading to the town. However, it seems that the Infected were able to circle around and make their way to the town anyway. The people scattered in all directions while trying to make their way to Riverside, as many vehicles are seen littered on the highway and in the tunnel.

The Survivors start off after a blockage on the road by fallen trees, preventing the armored truck from driving on to the town. They re-arm themselves from an abandoned police car and make their way to the military outpost. After circumventing the problem posed by its demolished approach bridge, they access the tunnel, trying to navigate their way in the tunnel filled with wrecked motor vehicles. The tunnel's condition, such as its partially collapsed roof, the obstacle course of abandoned vehicles and the barricade further ahead all finally force them to take an alternate route through the maintenance section. They find an exit via a doorway leading to the pumping facility for Riverside's overflow pipes, the entrance of which is a safe room.

Notes[]

  • A toll booth is never seen in the tunnel, despite the chapter title being called "The Turnpike".
  • The speed limit for driving through the tunnel is set at 45 mph (72 km/h).
  • There is also a deer caution sign near the tunnel cautioning drivers. Francis will sarcastically comment on it.
  • This is the first tunnel that the Survivors go through, the second being "The Tunnel" in the "Blood Harvest" campaign.
