Fireworks are a usable item that is found only in the Dark Carnival chapter, The Concert. They were likely going to be used by the Midnight Riders for their concert, but were not yet removed from their boxes and left behind when the park became overrun.
They can be picked up with the Use key (default: "E" for PC; "X" for Xbox 360) and release a field of exploding firecrackers that have an area of effect similar to a Molotov or Gas can when shot. A player cannot shoot while holding a box of fireworks, but can still melee shove Infected. There is no inventory space for this weapon, so the only method of transporting it is to pick it up and carry it, and eventually to throw/drop it into the ground. They are used to set up traps and provide a strong defense during large horde attacks.
Essentially, these are a Gas can replacement with one minor difference; they will not bounce when dropped or thrown. Five boxes will always be found in a crate opposite the stage during The Concert.
A useful tactic with items such as this is to spread them in an arc in front of you, as explosions from ignited Fireworks ignite unlit ones, causing a large chain reaction that helps with horde attacks and finales. Another tactic is to plant them near the two extraction points. When the helicopter arrives, simply shoot them to fend off chasing Infected. However, make sure that they don't block the route to the helicopter.A nice tactic for eliminating tanks with fireworks, pick up a box and lay it on the ground and stand over it and wait for the tank. When he comes near you (make sure he comes at you in the front) back up and shoot the fireworks so the tank will run through it and catch on fire. It should take 30 seconds for the tank to be consumed by fire. Then shoot at him until he dies.
Fireworks actually have similiar effects as Molotovs and Gas cans, but they have the widest range and do more damage to the Infected than fire does.
Notes
- The brand on the box reads "Bangers 'n' Mosh", which is a most likely nod to the dances known as headbanging and moshing, which are often performed by the audience of a rock concert.
- "Bangers 'n' Mosh" also appears to be a wordplay on bangers and mash, a traditional English dish which consists of sausages and mashed potato, usually with gravy.
- It is the first and only usable item found in a specific campaign (Dark Carnival) and chapter (The Concert) in the Left 4 Dead series.
- You can spawn a fireworks crate in any map by typing and entering "give fireworkcrate" in the console without the quotes. However, take note that this only works as long the console is activated first and as long as "sv_cheats 1" is on.
- Fireworks let off silver and white sparks until they burn out, leaving the infected burning in fire. Basing on the effects, it may have several types of fireworks inside the box: skyrockets, ground spinners, flares, sparklers, fire crackers, etc. Although it is mostly believed that it only consists of the latter (firecrackers), since it's area of effect only affects the floor/ground.
